Well, a collection of books. Gathered together over 1000’s of years which tells of people’s experience of God. Their struggles, joys, highs and lows. Like these four posts they don’t always make sense when read on their own. Like these posts they sometimes need the larger context to be best understood.
Sometimes the stories reference things we are familiar with and sometimes things we have no clue about. All of it is written in a language not many know really well. A sentence can be understood numerous ways and a mis-translation can make it mean something different. None of us read it in its original language so we all trust an experts interpretation that isn’t always accurate.
We all need people to help us better understand this ancient text. We also need to have a go ourselves as well. Trust our own sense of what God is saying to us. We need to ask questions of it. This is vital, excepting what someone else says is “gospel” is dangerous. We need to wrestle with, interrogate and get underneath what this collection of books is saying.
What is the bible? It is a collection of stories, poems, songs, sayings and good news. It is many people’s words about God and what he is doing in this creation of his. It is revolutionary and life changing.
