I like driving and when I turned the ripe old age of 17 I decided I wanted to learn. I spoke to friends who had already passed their test about who had taught them. I researched the cost and if I should do an intensive course or weekly lessons. In the end I decided I would trust the expertise of a school of motoring with the word ‘British’ in their title. The instructor I got wasn’t great, a bit abrupt at times, not the most friendly of chaps and a little impatient. It meant all in all, learning to drive wasn’t much fun. I never looked forward to lessons, would cancel them at the last minute if I could find an excuse and when I took my test and failed, I stopped. Nine years went by until I took another lesson, this time the instructor was very different, the experience was very different and I passed (the company was still the same though).

When we go out to find experts to help us with our hobby or something practical, like learning to drive, we give those people who we put our trust in, authority. These people are important as they impact on our experience and influence our understanding of the subject. If they provide the right amount of enthusiasm, encouragement and teaching we can learn to drive. We trust their judgment and advice and so, if they tell us that in order to make the best cake you have to beat the eggs for 30 minutes by hand, you do it. If they tell you that dried fish guts makes beer clear, you pour it in and if they explain how G/No.1 Scale is better than a 0/027 Scale you believe them. In all of this we are giving these “experts” a certain authority. They offer their interpretation on their field of expertise and we listen to it and apply it.

If every time we follow Delia’s recipes things fail we can give up on her ideas. If the person we trust tells us to go and see a band and they are rubbish we are less likely to listen to their advice again.

For some of us this is what has happened with the bible. We grew up being told by a particular ‘expert’ or group of ‘experts’ exactly what the bible does and doesn’t say. This was the truth, more than that, it was the word of God. ‘It is infallible and authoritative!’. They told us what it did and didn’t say. There is a good chance you wanted to hear what the bible said, to understand it’s stories and meaning. You were eager to learn, but as time went on a number of things probably happened. You discovered that these ‘experts’ were often hypercritical but never acknowledged it, which made things worse. Sometimes they manipulated situations using the bible to prove they were right and you were wrong. Other times you had questions and you wanted to wrestle with them but you were just told, ‘This is what the BIBLE says’ and you were shut down. For many people this experience wasn’t great and it left them feeling betrayed by those people they trusted to help. So you gave up.
