One thing I have learnt from all this digging is that no matter how much I do, I will never win. It will never stay that way for long. My dams will erode, the tide will come in and dump sand in my pools and my trenches will run dry as the water finds its own path to the sea.
In each of the passages, the waterways are initiated and regulated by God. He creates the spring in the wilderness and makes a path in the desert. In Ezekiel the trickle that begins at the temple soon becomes an impassable river that no one can cross. Finally, in Revelation, God’s city streets act as the river bed for the water to flow along from under the throne of God.
This reminds us of an important truth. That God is the one in control. We may want to plough on in a certain direction, dig our own trenches and begin our own initiatives but they are pointless if God is not a the centre of them. As individuals and as churches, as we seek to reach out to our communities and those in need, we need to find where the signs of God’s Spirit are bubbling up and work there.

- That we would be able to give our plans to God and allow Him to guide us.
- That we would sense the signs of his Spirit moving around us and that we would have the courage to join with him.
