I Am Doing A New Thing : Exploring the Themes of Jubilee : Lent 2015

David 2015, Jubilee, Lent Leave a Comment

Tucked away in one of the most difficult books of the Old Testament is a chapter relating to the year of Jubilee.  This event which would take place every 50 years was a time of renewal for the people of God and the land they had been promised.  Fields would be rested from being worked, land would be return to their former owners and enslaved people would be freed to return home.

It was a time of Sabbath, liberation, community, justice and healing. A reminder that everything comes from the God who created all things.

Some argue that a Jubilee was never celebrated by the Israelites but that doesn’t mean we should deem it irrelevant.  The themes contained within the dream of the Jubilee are an opportunity for us to find our place within God’s purposes anew, both as individuals and as a church.
