Long Term Gardening

David 2015, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Mission, Prophesy, Psalm, Standing in the Stream Leave a Comment

As Ezekiel makes his way back from the mouth of the river he sees trees along the banks of the river producing fruit.  He is told that fruit trees will grow where-ever the river flows.  In Revelation, John sees a single tree, the tree of life.  This tree has roots on both sides of the river and again is said to produce fruit.

Trees are long term projects.  A friend of mine planted an acorn 35 years ago. The tree is just about big enough to climb and it still has a couple of hundred years until it is fully grown.  If you are planting a tree from its seed, you are committing to nurturing it for a very long time and there is a good chance it will out-live you.

Mission and evangelism is often like this.  It isn’t like growing cress which sprouts up in weeks and then fades quickly.  Planting seeds that will affect a person’s life and a community for a long, long time is a big commitment.  It takes years of prayer, nurture, protection, healing and care to see those that we live with and minister to grow along the banks of God’s river.  The promise of this work, though, is amazing.  These trees in turn will produce fruit, feed others, sow seeds and heal another generation.
