Introduction

The cross looms large over the Christian faith. It is the central symbol adopted by the faith and has been used in many ways through the two millennia since Jesus death. It is also for many the object that causes the most questions and at times confusion. Why the cross? Why did Jesus have to die? What happened that first Good Friday? Did it change anything?

These questions are not new and have been there, either explicitly or implicitly, throughout the life of the early church, the church fathers, the enlightenment and into our modern age. These and other questions have been wrestled with and answered in different ways. These answers contain some great truth but they can also lead to more questions and at worst some rather worrying distortions.

The purpose of this lent course is to explore the cross of Jesus Christ anew and maybe begin to cast some new light on these and other questions. This series is inspired in part by N.T Wright’s latest book titled ‘The Day the Revolution Began”1 as well as a theological niggle I have carried over the years.
