Isaiah 58:1-13

In the opening books of the Hebrew Bible laws, rules and rituals are set out to help the people in their daily worship. By the time Isaiah spoke these words, those rituals had become a stumbling block as the people began to fast without meaning and sacrifice because they felt they had to, not because they wanted to. We are called to be followers of Jesus and not to go through the motions and do the things we think are important. We should be people that are inspired to fast because it draws us closer to God and concentrates us on His will. We give to bless others and to share that which God has given us. We seek renewal because we want to find a fresh purpose from God and do the things He calls us to do.
