What does it mean to be a Pioneer?

I have asked myself this question many times.  From my time in Nottingham when I heard sermons preached on being pioneers and not pilgrims to more recent years where the idea of pioneer ministry has become more prominent.

What does it mean to be a pioneer?
What does it look like?
Where can you do it?
Lots and lots of questions.

So I thought I would try and explore some of these questions and the idea of being a pioneer to see where it fits and what it might look like within my ministry, mission, church and life.

Where to begin

The word pioneer has a number of definitions and these alone begin to cast light on what it means to be a pioneer but they also raise more.

They are;

  • Someone who travels into unknown or unclaimed territory to settle.
  • Someone who opens up a new area of thought, development or research.
  • A soldier who performs construction and demolition in the field to allow troop movement.
  • A species which is the first to establish itself in bare or disturbed areas.
  • A characteristic of early settlers.
  • Leading the way.

Alongside this the definition for pioneering and pioneered are;

  • To venture into an area or prepare a way.
  • To settle.
  • To initiate or participate in development.

As I read through these a few things jumped out that I want to explore in more detail to try and answer some of my original questions and the others that arise.  Is settling inevitable? Can pioneering be about demolition as well as constructing? What about leading, venturing and preparing? Pioneering in thought and deed?

But those questions are for another time.
